I met Holly through the Balanced Bites Master Class Practitioners program and the 21-Day Sugar Detox Coaches Program both of which she’s the program manager for!

I’ve also been fortunate enough to meet Holly in real-life in Portland, where she lives and where I spend a lot of time visiting family.

As soon as I met her, I immediately sensed that she is the type of person who always sees the silver lining in every situation and uplifts everyone around her. She exudes positivity - which is probably why I so look forward to every opportunity I have to spend time with her.

In this episode, Holly shares her own health journey, as well as her struggles and triumphs in helping her boys overcome their own health struggles, particularly around the body + brain connection.

She also shares her insights on reiki and tapping, also known as EFT or emotional freedom techniques and how they can be used to manage stress in seemingly impossible situations.

Let’s get to the show!

Naomi Nakamura: Hi Holly! Welcome to the show!

Holly Morello: Hi Naomi. Thank you. I'm honored to be here.

Naomi Nakamura: I am so excited that we finally got to connect for this.

Holly Morello: I know. Thank you for rescheduling for me.

Naomi Nakamura: Well for listeners who don't know I was a student in the Balanced Bites Master Class and I'm also a 21-Day Sugar Detox Coach and that's how we connected because you’re the Program Manager for both of those programs.

Holly Morello: Yep I am and you’re a super student!

Naomi Nakamura: And I spent a lot of time in Portland where you are based and I have been fortunate enough to meet you in person! And the first time we met and you shared your story and I just thought it was such a beautiful story that I just wanted to share it with other people. A lot of us to get into this work, we all have our own personal reasons that brought us to want to help other people with their own health and wellness, but I really want you to share yours because it really is so beautiful.

And I know a lot of it was centered around your kids and I'm not a mom but I could relate to it so much just from having a mom. So, to get started I know you’re a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, so for those who may not know what that is, can you explain what that is and what you do?

Holly Morello: Sure. Well Nutritional Therapy Practitioner is a holistic nutritionist who helps clients support the root cause of their symptoms, whatever they might be – digestive, headaches, any kind of depression, anxiety things like that. What we do is we break it down to the bare bones basics and working through a north to south process, starting with what's going on in the brain and then what's going on with the digestion, what's going on with the blood - a lot of times we address the body's functions. A lot of these things take care of themselves basically when eating nutrient-dense foods or removing the most inflammatory foods. A lot of things really fall into place. It isn't the only path to healing but it's one of the foundational parts of healing.

So, I'm really honored to be part of the Nutritional Therapy Association. It exceeded my expectations greatly and the tools that I've learned there will serve me throughout my life even if I decide one day that I don't want to be a nutritionist anymore. I can use those that skillset to help myself and my family and so on. So, it was well worth the investment, and I feel really well equipped to help anybody in any situation, to support them with other modalities they might be working with whether it be a medical doctor or psychiatrist or psychologist or a naturopath or whatever - I help compliment. That's kind of what it is in a nutshell.

Naomi Nakamura: How did you come into this work? Because you had a whole prior career prior to this, right?

Holly Morello: Yes. So, for the first 10 years of my career I was in the Defense Contracting world in electronics and engineering in the Washington D.C. area. And I loved that job! I got to travel a lot. I was a contractor and I somewhat retired early after my second baby was born and he was super high maintenance and was sick a lot so I kind of took short a kind of an early retirement. But I can never just be one thing so I did that was while doing some side hustle things as well. I worked with a wellness company where we did I taught race walking.

Naomi Nakamura: I didn't know that.

Holly Morello: Yes. I was. One person was a nutritionist. And there a couple of us that taught race walking so I did that as a side hustle. And I also used to do a “Dress for Success” type of thing. Seminars and teach people how to dress appropriately for work. And I would go into businesses and give them tips on how to dress for their personality type which is kind of funny. And also for their for their coloring and also I would actually help them with makeup and stuff.

Naomi Nakamura: So, good. So Different.

Holly Morello: Yeah, I did that. But my middle son was when I started digging into nutrition. I've always been into nutrition. But I started to get into a little bit more because he had a lot of issues.

Naomi Nakamura: And your kids are older now if you were way ahead of the curve of everybody else on this.

Holly Morello: Yeah as a matter of fact I ordered a book called, “Is This Your Child?” by Doris Rapp. She was one of the first pioneers in Naturopathic Medicine, in Environmental Medicine and looking at the environmental causes of all kinds of issues with children. And I did that because my husband has a life-threatening food allergies and I was looking for any way to prevent that in my children. So, I kind of had a little bit of a glimpse of this natural way of looking at things.

We eventually moved to Oregon because we were looking for a slower paced lifestyle. It was really kind of crazy in the Northern Virginia area where we lived and although we love it there. We love our friends and family there. It was just a really hard place to raise a family. So, when my husband got an offer, we didn't know anybody there. The life in this area and as you know it's amazing. We love it. We meant to stay for two years and it's been over 20, so we obviously really like this place.

But when I had my third child and things were just fine but I’m just kind of person that just can't sit still. I'm always starting a club, volunteering in the schools, teaching Sunday school, you know all the things. And then when my third child started preschool we started noticing things that weren't quite right.

But I kept thinking well it was me as a parent. Maybe I wasn't being strict enough or maybe I wasn't being consistent enough. So, I just kept trying to parent harder. And then over time his issues got to be pretty dysfunctional as far as anxiety and he actually got to the point where he was depressed.

What we know now is that he had dysfunction as his body was causing him to always be in a state of fight or flight constantly anxiety driven. And so even though he's a sweet kid something would just kind of make him go off on a tangent that wasn't really like him. And then he had a hard time controlling his body movements, yet at the same time he was very coordinated.

And he was brilliant. So all these things didn't really make sense to people for a long time. And he was always considered a poorly behaved kid. And I was told, “You better do a better job at home, Mom.” So, it was really hard. I took it really hard on myself and I just kept trying to parent harder. And then when he got deeply depressed. I just stopped everything and pulled him out of school. We spent a couple years really digging to figure out what is going on here because I just I knew something wasn't right but I just didn't know what it was. And so we took him to a lot of different specialists and we did a lot of different therapies and protocols for him.

Naomi Nakamura: And he was still at the elementary school age, right?

Holly Morello: Yes. He was at the elementary age during this time. And some things that really helped him were occupational therapy. That helped his brain and body connect. And speech therapy, which is he didn't have any kind of speech impediments, but he didn't know how to respond to somebody in an appropriate manner. For example, you would ask a question and he would respond with a different topic and he wouldn't really engage back and forth in a conversation. He wouldn’t look at you in the eye. He was better with people that he knew really well but not strangers. And so, a lot of this was really anxiety-driven kind of situations. So, he did those things and he did get a little bit better.

And we actually did try a little bit of medication for him because he was so depressed and it was a nightmare. I would never I would never discourage anybody from doing that. We did all these different things and it would help for a little bit. But then we discovered that it was causing a lot of problems.

We were able to finally get him onto a very small dose of something and then get him back in to school. At that time he was doing really well. He was thriving for the first time in his life. But still something wasn't right. The body-brain connection thing wasn't really quite connected even though he was doing so much better. The body-brain connection just wasn't there. Everything he did was too fast or too strong. You know he would just go beyond what was appropriate. And so just by chance my middle son was wrestling and he wanted to he wanted to drop weight and that wasn't okay with us because that was like a nightmare situation.

I just happened to be on this journey myself, getting myself better once my son went back to school, and I went gluten-free casein-free and Paleo-ish - not quite Paleo, but Paleo-ish. I was feeling a lot better and lost some body fat. I had also gone into deep depression and that had lifted. I mean I was on five different medications before because you know you really can't focus when you're depressed.

Naomi Nakamura: I've so been there.

Holly Morello: So yeah, I was on all those medications and I ended up going off all of them. And my husband was like, “Wow. Whatever you're doing I think we should try that with Jake. And it was more wanting to help him get to where he wanted to be for wrestling. in a healthy way. And so we did that for him. I was trying to learn and stumble upon Paleo and stumbled on Robb Wolf and I listened to Robb’s podcast over and over again and my youngest son heard Robb Wolfe on that podcast and said, Well, should I do this too?” And I was just like, “My gosh, if you want to!” We had already actually tried a gluten-free, casein-free diet in the past but that was like years ago and I think there were some things that we didn't do right like such as the fat-intake and things like that. We didn't really balance out carbs and nutrients were really weren't balanced out. So anyway back to the situation with these boys. Gosh within a month. So, we all did it together. Within months, all these lingering symptoms, he was just more compliant and more cheerful and he wasn't bouncing off the walls, he wasn't falling down.

My middle son had become a lean, strong, muscular and fast-focused athlete that everybody was like, “Oh my god what have you done?!” And the teachers at my son's school, my youngest son's school - at that time he was just starting a seventh grade, so those teachers -- and he was on to an IEP just that Independent Education Plan -- at that time his teachers her didn't really know him and they were like why is he on an IEP? I mean he's like one of our best students, and that’s because they didn't see him before.

And then I told the story and some of the teachers that knew him before were asking me, “What did you do?” And another teacher said, “Could you come in and talk to me and tell me what you did, because my son also has issues like your son had.” So anyway, it was pretty miraculous. My husband started feeling better and looking better and we just kind of looked to each other and said was whatever this is. So, it was pretty amazing and just as time went on, I just started telling people about it and a lot of people were asking me. For example, I went to my high school reunion, and you know I'm 55. So, we’re menopausal age and a lot of people were saying, “Wow, you look really great. What are you doing?” And it's not just about looks but I feel really good too. And so a lot of people started asking me questions, because I told them, “I wasn't feeling good. I felt really bad. And these are this is what happened. And now this is where I am.”

Naomi Nakamura: And I can see it in your countenance too.

Holly Morello: Thank you. Thanks. So anyway, I just started teaching this to other people and I did get some pushback, kind of was like shouting from the rooftops about it. But then again, I was you know a little bit of evangelistic about it and people don't want to be told these things. I can write blogs about it. Things like that. But people need to come to me. I can't just tell them.

Naomi Nakamura: I've learned that too.

Holly Morello: Yes. I was so focused on how to help Zach feel better for so many years so I decided it's time for me to move on to the next thing.

I wasn't sure if I was going to go back before this all happened. I wasn't sure if I was going to go back into the engineering field or not. But when this happened I'm like OK I think I know what my life's calling is now because I didn't know before. And now I know I am supposed to go and help other families not go through what we did because it was a really horrible situation because it wasn't only my son was suffering. The family dynamics were suffering and dying. And I was suffering. And if mom suffering you know everybody suffering. And so, it did affect our family in a pretty substantial way. And I thought a lot of shame I have felt, so much shame about it. And so getting over that was also a big thing.

But now I know I'm a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner. I worked for Diane Sanfilippo, which is amazing. And I've been able to help a lot of people. And I have taken on different modalities besides nutritional therapy. Reiki is also a big part of my healing process.

Naomi Nakamura: I really want to get into that!

Holly Morello: Yes. Because I know a lot of what I've done with myself and my family. I've heard you talk about on this podcast already, and so I just want to tell you what you're doing with this podcast is amazing. I love it. And yes all the stuff that you're talking about that you teach your clients are really foundational to what I do and believe as well. So that's kind of the story in a nutshell.

Naomi Nakamura: It's amazing. When I hear a lot of people tell their mom stories they're very touching, but yours just touch me in a different way. And like you said much of this is all foundational stuff that I like to call, “the non-negotiables.” It’s the type of the things that people forget about. Everyone wants to know what supplements we should be taking, what hacks to do, but it's really just non-negotiable stuff.

Holly Morello: Exactly, it's what I like to focus on too. And let me just tell you, because I didn't say where he is now because that was seventh grade He's now a freshman in college, and he's doing amazingly well. He was able to finally get off medication before he even started high school and he graduated with honors. He's studying Computer Science and he's doing really well. He's very motivated. He’s a unique, really cool kid. And he doesn't mind that I share a story - I got his permission to do that. And I'm just really proud of him because this it's not just me, what I did for him. I don't really feel like I'm the healer or whatever. He had to have the buy in.

And you know the mind body spirit thing is so important. The things that I did with him were also a lot of the environmental things that you're talking about like removing all the toxins from our home. We got him a nontoxic mattress at the same time as we started the diet. So it was an experiment. I can't replicate that, but I when I do work with clients I do recommend that they pursue a non-toxic food.

Naomi Nakamura: It all makes a difference and you may not realize it. It took me a long time to be convinced that probiotics was helping me and it wasn't until I stopped taking it that I realized it actually was - all these little things that we don't realize are helping us. But we give it a try and then we go off of it again, and these experiments become really powerful for us.

Holly Morello: Yeah. Absolutely. And what I noticed with my son for example, is that really he thrives very well on a very high fat, lower carb diet. But we had to be strategic about carbs when he was wrestling because he was a very good wrestler. He placed an in the district and then he actually went to state. After I took him off all gluten and dairy when he would get some of that, it was bad. But in a way, it was good because I could say, “See you know make the connection. See this is what happened.” And so he started to understand that so he avoided that.

Over time he tested a little bit more and a little bit more and he was able to do those things in high school. At pizza parties, he was able to partake without any problems. And you know every once in a while, I could see something creeping up and say, “OK let's cut back on the carbs and increase the fat.”

And now in college, he's on his own to do it himself. And he's choosing the gluten-free options, he's making his own food. But there's all these little things that can make a big difference.

Naomi Nakamura: Awesome. So, you spend a lot of your time helping people with mental and behavioral challenges, like your son. And earlier, you mentioned Reiki.

Now I have only been exposed to Reiki this year few months ago. There's a woman who practices Reiki at my chiropractor and we were just chit-chatting at the receptionist desk and she's like, “Why don't you give it a try?” And I did. And I didn't know anything about it. I didn't know what it was but it was the most amazing experience. So, you’re a Reiki Master. Can you share more about that with us because most people don't know what it is and how you use it in your practice.

Holly Morello: So, I just I stumbled upon Reiki when I was at my lowest - the lowest part of my journey, with just feeling like I had failed my son.

He was at a co-op kind of home school, the kind of a place where they also classes for adults, and there was a class on how to do Reiki. I I haven't really said much about this before but I was in a really bad place. I was driving, just driving, and it didn't know where I was going and I was listening to radio show and it was a psychiatrist or psychologist, I can't remember which. And she was talking about how she had a Reiki Master on her staff and she didn't know what the Reiki Master did that much. She didn't how it worked, but she said she had her clients go to this reiki person and they got amazing results. And so, but she didn't really say what it was, she was like, “I don't really understand it. I just have my clients go and they say you know I feel like I don't really know what it is but it's pretty awesome and I feel really relaxed after my session.”

Naomi Nakamura: Yeah.

Holly Morello: So, I decided, “Look I don't know what this is but I'm going to take this course because it says stress really and I need that badly.” So, Reiki is considered a complementary energy medicine. It originated in Japan. It's an ancient healing modality. I mean like I said, I don't ever consider myself a healer. I consider myself a teacher. And so the whole idea is you as a Reiki practitioner or you go through classes.

And the whole idea is that you're facilitating this universal energy. It's not religious-based or anything. It's the energy that all of us have available to us and you facilitate that with your client who is fully clothed that lays on the table, or it could be sitting on a chair or whatever and you just basically you go through like the chakras. You just place your hands either on or above the client and the whole idea is this universal source energy source is kind of going to where it's needed and it's all good, both ways. No bad energy comes to me. No energy goes to the client. It's all good. And I don't facilitate that energy going anywhere. It's supposed to know where to go. That's the whole idea.

It does sound woo-woo. I still don't really totally understand it myself. You don't have to understand it fully or even completely believe in it to give it or receive it to benefit from it. I benefit every time I give it.

The whole idea is to help facilitate this is a complementary medicine. It's not an “instead of,” it's and “in addition to” and it really helps the body kind of get into it. To me I see it as something that helps you get into a “rest and digest” versus “fight or flight.”

It gets you into what’s called a “parasympathetic state” versus a “sympathetic state” which is the fight or flight. It really helps. I think it's the whole human touch thing and somebody's paying that much attention to you with positive energy for 30 minutes or 20 minutes or 90 minutes, however long you do it.

It's something that we don't even experience with people that we love that often. So it's amazing how powerful it is. And again, I don't really totally understand it. I learned it to give to myself. Although during training would give it to each other but giving this myself was part of helping me become more open-minded to other kind of complementary alternative holistic healing modalities.

It really helped me calm down and helped me sleep. And to me that was super powerful and anything that can help someone sleep is super powerful. And I would practice on my son and that was when he was really having some difficult times. I really believe it helped him really calm down.

And so, I went through a couple of different trainings. There’s Reiki I where you learn how to do any yourself and then Reiki II where you learn how to be a practitioner, and then a Reiki Master where you can basically teach somebody to do Reiki, then you can teach it Reiki I or Reiki II people, and you can you can help somebody become a Reiki Master.

I would warn people to do your research before you go to somebody and get a good referral, because there are some people that mix other things into it that I don't really know about. I can't speak to that. I just know Reiki. It's so. And that by itself is very powerful and not harmful. It's always helpful. And I've seen amazing results on some people that I have done it on and I wouldn't say that not everybody gets like this immediate “oh my god that was amazing” the first time. Sometimes they need to do it over a number of sessions but sometimes it's pretty amazing in just one session. I've seen that. It's used by some NFL teams as well as NBA teams. It's used in hospitals in operating rooms and there was a recent study that I heard about that was for heart patients that were having surgery and it really helped.

I don't know how they tested that it's pretty amazing. And what I really love about it is you can do it yourself. You don't necessarily have to go to a practitioner especially if you don't want a massage or you can't have a massage. It's really powerful in that way because some people do feel like it feels like a massage in some way.

Naomi Nakamura: You know you said you just said some amazing things. I have a couple of thoughts on that. When I did a social media post on Reiki like a month or two ago, one of my health friends actually messaged me and said, “You don't believe in that stuff, do you?”

And I said, “We're holistic health coaches - of course we do!” But for me and I think you hit the nail on the head. Because it’s 2017 and we all have so much going on. We're constantly on our devices, we're constantly being stimulated, and I think Reiki just holds space to have that connection that we need because we’re so wired that we can't even tap into that on our own.

Holly Morello: Exactly, I know, and what I think a lot of people don't realize is we need to restore our body. We cannot restore and detoxify and even digest properly unless we are in that rested state. So we're often not in that state for it to get into that state.

Naomi Nakamura: Exactly. Exactly.

Holly Morello: So, any time that you can get yourself into that parasympathetic rest and digest state is extremely valuable and important and helpful to your mind body and spirit.

Naomi Nakamura: I think there's nothing new about the mind body connection and I think if people really take the time to understand it even from a scientific standpoint, it won't sound so “woo-woo,” although I don't believe there's anything wrong with “woo-woo.” But now you also mentioned something to me, I think it was last week or the week before we talked – and it was EFT, or Emotional Freedom Technique.

Now I know nothing about this. I know that I've heard Gabby Bernstein talk about it and I know Denise Duffield-Thomas talks about it. And honestly when I see them, I just see them tapping on their temple and I really don't get it. Please share with us what you know about this. Holly Morello: Okay, well first of all I'm not an expert at all about it. I did say that the first time I learned about it was through Diane Sanfilippo because she wrote an article about it a long time ago. I don't remember when but I actually had a naturopath give me a tapping routine to do. And this is before I really understood how important it was to address deep buried emotions. You know I went to this naturopath thinking I'm going to like a holistic doctor and he told me that that I had an emotional trauma stuck in my C-section scar. And so he gave me this routine to do at night. I did it, but I just didn't really connect to it. I mean he didn't really talk to me about it, he just kind of said, “Oh this is the situation and here's the piece of paper with it.”

Naomi Nakamura: I've had that experience before with many things and you do it because they tell you but you don't quite understand why.

Holly Morello: Exactly. But I did it but I wasn't really you know comprehending it and I wasn't really trying to, and I didn't do it that often. I don't know maybe it did something, I don't really know but when I heard about it through Diane, and then there's this company called The Tapping Solution. I have the book in front of me. Nick Ortner wrote The Tapping Solution and he and his partner, who is his sister, they did a a world summit and so I listened to it. Before that I had already read the book and I was practicing on myself. And basically, it was developed in the 1970’s by a psychiatrist or psychologist I think. And anyway he was trying to help somebody with a phobia.

And his patient was really stuck. And he kind of just came up with this method based acupuncture points. And there are certain points in acupuncture that relate to organs and systems in the body. So, he made that connection and he had this one client who stuck do some tapping on those acupuncture points which can be as acupressure points, with touch or tap and it can be just as powerful, and maybe even more so when there is anxiousness and restricts that so there is emotional release. So anyway, he developed kind of like a bunch of different routines. And then there was one of his students, Gary Cragg who actually developed the idea that don't have you don't have to do that routine. There are certain points that you can tap on and it can help with really anything. There's a little script that you say and then you go through this little routine.

What I love about it is the fact that anybody can do it and anybody can learn it for free because it's there's all kinds of YouTube videos. You can go to www.thetappingsolution.com they have scripts to do it and they show you how to do it.

You can teach it to children. I've had some of my clients teach it to their children. You can go into that bathroom and they could do that. And I loved that because some people have no control over their situation but they can kind of can have control over their own emotions by just kind of stepping away and go and do that that little routine.

I find it really powerful for myself if I'm feeling really anxious about something, if I'm about to speak somewhere I'll go into the bathroom and I'll just go through the whole process of this campaign to help calm myself down.

I mean I could do a little bit of Reiki on myself but I just I really love to have different tools for different situations and. And also, I like to have different tools that resonate with different people. It's really awesome that you if you come up with your own script because it's from you, actually from your heart. So when you when it's coming from your heart I think it's even more powerful. But to start you can use the scripts that they give you. You can download a free script at www.thetappingsolution.com. And I have no affiliated relation with them whatsoever. They don't know who I am. But anyway it's you can practice it with their script and then you can see how to get the idea and then it's so easy to do your own script and you don't even have to do a script. I found it really powerful just to do it without even saying anything. So it's super powerful and I love it for a lot of different reasons. And I know that you know, just like with Reiki, there's practitioners who use these modalities in very traumatic situations where there's like a mass amount of people that have experienced trauma and it's been very powerful and so interesting.

Naomi Nakamura: I think that would be a great tool for people who in the corporate world.

Holly Morello: Yeah absolutely. Especially if somebody is not ready to like discuss their emotions about something you know or don't even know what's really bothering them.

Naomi Nakamura: So in my almost 20-year career in Silicon Valley, I know it's a tension-filled place. And so even just being able to, like you said, slip into the restroom and being able to have some type of stress relieving tool to help you cope with whatever the situation is.

Holly Morello: Yes. Absolutely. And one thing that you can do is to put your hand into a fist. Let's say you put your left hand into a fist and with your right hand you just kind of tap at the end of your fist. And you just kind of tap there. I don't know if I'm explaining it right, but you can just do that underneath the table.

Naomi Nakamura: I’m going to have to do this I've got some meetings coming up this week. That in itself is really helpful.

Holly Morello: Yeah. And so nobody's going to know really what you're doing.

Naomi Nakamura: Awesome. Well Holly this has been a wonderful conversation. I feel like you have so many gifts and tools to offer, so thank you so much for taking the time to share your story. I'm not a parent but I can imagine there's a lot of other listeners out there who are who will appreciate what you've had to share with us today.

Holly Morello: Well thank you my honor. I really hope to help as many parents as I can even if it's one.

Naomi Nakamura: Now how can people connect to you.

Holly Morello: So, my website is www.nourishingexcellence.com and I'm also on Instagram where I post much more often.

Naomi Nakamura: You have an awesome Instagram feed! I’ve saved so many of your posts especially all the food stuff.

Holly Morello: Thank you and I’m at @nourishingholly Instagram and on Twitter. But I tend to just link my Instagram to Twitter. And I'm also on Facebook at the same name, but some people are only on Facebook so it's Nourishing Excellence by Holly.

Naomi Nakamura: I'll link to everything in the show notes. Thank you so much for joining!
