Episode 265: Learning By Human Design
We all learn and process information differently. Some of us learn best by listening, while others learn visually through art and reading.
But Human Design takes things to another level in embracing our individuality in how we learn.
In this episode, I discuss our learning styles according to our Profile Lines.

Hello there, friend! Welcome back to The Live FAB Life Podcast. I'm your host, Naomi Nakamura!
With this episode airing in August, it's back to school season - maybe for yourself, maybe for your kids, maybe both! And since learning is a lifetime endeavor that never ends, today’s episode is on how we learn according to our Human Design.
I’ve always been cognizant that we all learn and process information differently. Some of us best process by listening - hence the podcast, and why I have transcripts of every episode on the show notes on my website.
But Human Design takes things to another level, embracing our individuality in how we learn. So, in this episode, we’ll talk about what that looks like.
In Episode 193, I talked about Profile Lines and how Profile Lines are our personalities. Well, Profile Lines are also our learning styles. And I think it's important to understand our learning styles because most academic systems teach in one traditional way, but that’s not the best way every person learns.
So, imagine being someone who isn’t suited to learn from traditional ways of teaching. I talked about comparisonitis in Episode 263, and expecting everyone to learn the same way leans into the dangers of comparisonitis.
As I put together my thoughts for this episode, I recalled back to intermediate school. In seventh grade, we were sectioned into groups, grades, and academic testing, I guess. The kids in 7A were considered the smartest, followed by 7B, 7C, and 7D.
Imagine being a 12 or 13-year-old and put in 7D - the perceived lowest of the rankings - and having everyone know what that means. Think about what kind of impact this had on a child’s self-esteem, what they thought of themselves, and how they compared themselves to others when in reality, they may just not be great at taking tests or have a different learning style than that of a traditional school system.
So, it's important to understand the best way we learn.
We’re all unique. even down to how we learn.
So in Human Design, there are six Profile Lines. And as discussed in Episode 193, Profile Lines are our personalities, but they’re also our learning styles.
So let’s jump in and take a look at each one!
First, those with a One Line want to know everything about their interests. They go deep and want to know everything about it. They become the go-to resource for that topic. Some might perceive them as a know-it-all, but they’re very much in line with their design.
And when it comes to learning, the key here is “what they’re interested in” - not everything.
So, don't take classes on subjects or topics you're not interested in. If you spend your time and energy on what you're interested in, it’s wasted energy - an energy leak - when you could be spending that time and energy on what you are interested in.
I have a One Line in my design, so I understand this very much. I started taking piano lessons when I was three years old. And by the time I got to 6th or 7th grade, I’d lost interest in it. But my parents refused to let me quit, and I had to continue with it till I graduated from high school.
It was such a waste of time and money, not just for me or my parents but also for my teacher. I had zero interest in it and put in as much effort.
So, if you have a One Line, a child, classmate, student, friend, or someone you care about who has a One Line - don't spend time on things you're not interested in and use on what does. allow your authority to guide you on what your interests are. You know, don't force yourself or think that you have to be interested in something because everyone else that you know is interested in something. If you're not, you're not, and follow your authority in guiding you into what those interests are. And then again, if you are a parent, don't force your kids, as my parents forced me with piano lessons, so don't force your interest on your child if that is not something they're interested in for themselves.
Maybe you have a child with a One Line, or you’re not in the position to have complete autonomy to choose what classes or courses you take. If this is the case,
If you have 2 Profile Line, alone time is a necessity.
They process everything they've learned alone; that’s how they best process things. Additionally, being around others can feel very draining, so alone time is how they renew their energy.
So for a 2 Profile Line, group work isn't the best learning situation for them.
They might do better - and thrive - with independent study.
If you have a 3 Profile Line, which I do, we best learn by trying things out and seeing what happens - trial and error. So, embrace learning through life experiences.
And if you have a student, child, classmate, friend, etc., who has the 3rd Profile Line, recognize that they need to try things out for themselves. This might mean learning things the hard way and allowing them to fail. They won’t learn by taking your word for it; they must experience things themselves.
So, reframing failure’s important for them because that’s how we 3rd Lines gain wisdom - all through our life experiences. So, there is no such thing as failure. Now, 4th Profile Line people thrive in communities and are fantastic relationship builders.
Whereas 2nd Lines may not do well with group work, 4th Lines absolutely will!
So, if you’re a 4th Line or know someone who is, cultivate relationships, communities, and a support system where you feel safe and trust so you can thrive! This is the best learning environment for you - learning in community.
People with 5th Profile Lines are known as problem solvers, and to me, 5th Liners are also natural leaders because people look to them to lead them through an experience or on their journey.
So, in this sense, 5th Lines learn best when they have people to help. So 5th Liners put yourself, or the 5th Liner that you love, in situations where you can help others through leadership - volunteer work, leadership opportunities. Your most meaningful learning experiences can come through thsee kinds of experiences.
And last but certainly not least, we have those with the 6th Profile Line - the role models.
Sixtth Liners are different. Having a Sixth line is about the different stages that we have in life. For the first 30 years of life, a 6th Liner will operate as a 3rd Profile LIne, learning from life experiences.
Around the time of their Saturn Return, they will shift into their next phase of life, that’s commonly referred to as “on the roof,” meaning they start to take in the life lessons they learned in their first 30 years and begin to evolve to become the role model they wish they had.
Their first 30 years may be rocky, turbulent, and full of drama, but with an awareness that this is how their energy functions, hopefully, they can minimize the trauma of their experiences.
So, if you have a 6th Profile Line or know someone who does, seek deep connections, surround yourself people you look up to as role models, and be patient, knowing that your most important lessons will come in hindsight as you mature through life.
Be mindful of and record your experiences because those experiences will formulate the progression of your life and will be lessons that you’ll carry with you as you mature and evolve to become the role model you wish you had.
