Episode 180: Bioindividuality and Human Design
Human Design embraces your uniqueness, showing why general, blanket statement advice may not work for you. It's not that there’s anything wrong with you, rather, there’s a more effective way that comes more naturally to you, which begs the question, “How well do we know ourselves? What parts of us are inherent to us? What parts have we been conditioned to be?”
The onus is on each of us to observe, explore, and uncover the answers to those questions, and what emerges is a deep sense of self-awareness that develops into an intimate knowledge of who you really are, and what you need to thrive - not just what you might have been conditioned to believe.
In the solo episode, I explore the intersection between bio-individuality, the idea that no one diet works for everyone, and Human Design, a framework that sheds like on our subtle, innate gifts.
You’ll hear me share:
What is bio-individuality?
What is Human Design?
The intersection of where they meet
How, collaboratively, they can help us step into our highest potential

Hey friend, welcome back to The Live FAB Life Podcast. I’m your host, Naomi Nakamura.
As I’ve sporadically shared in earlier episodes, as well as on my Instagram account, earlier this year I’ve expanded my work to include Human Design. In fact, it’s become quite a core piece of it.
And a few weeks, maybe even a couple of months ago, I had put a call out to my Instagram community opening the space up for any questions about Human Design and I’m thrilled to have gotten so many questions about it.
There’s so many layers to Human Design and knowing what people are curious about has given me an idea of where to start when I share about it, and based on the questions I got, it appears that I should start with the very basics.
I started answering some of the questions on my Instagram account, but I realized that they’re also GREAT topics for the podcast so the next few weeks, probably into months will be sharing the foundations of Human Design so that if you’re not familiar with it, you can get a basic understanding of it and can then have context as I weave it into the topics that I’ve discussed over the past four years of this show – because in my mind, it all ties together.
So the first question that I’m tackling today was not directly, yet directly related to Human Design…”Are you still doing health coaching?”
I can see how it would be confusing to the casual listener or follower if you’re not paying attention to closely and might have missed the shift where one day I’m talking about the Functional Nutrition, Gut Health, Environmental Toxins, sugar detoxes and what not, and then suddenly scroll through and see something called Human Design?
So short answer – yes, I am still doing health coaching and offering the 21-Day Sugar Detox.
Long answer? I want to spend this episode doing some level setting of how Human Design synergistically compliments the work that I’ve been doing, and even takes it a step further.
Back when I was in nutrition school, one of the first concepts that was emphasized over and over again, was the idea of bio individuality – the idea that there is no one right way of eating that applies to everyone.
We are all really, really unique individuals.
And even then, within ourselves, we also change and evolve, and as we do, our needs change as well. What my mind and body needs now in the year 2021, at the age of 46, is much different than what it needed a decade ago back in 2011, when I was in my mid-30’s and an endurance athlete.
Having open Head and Ajna centers in my Human Design, I’m flexible in my thinking, able to see many different angles of situations.
As I’ve pondered the concept of bio-individuality, I’ve found myself expanding on that, going beyond that thinking because along the same lines of there not being a universal “healthy” diet that works for everyone, general health recommendations don’t really work either.
So the onus is on each of us to constantly be doing a lot of self-observation, kindly with non-judgement, to find what works for each and every one of us - uniquely. And when we take a functional approach, with medicine, nutrition, wellness, we always ask not just “what” is going on, or “what” is the problem, but “why” is this a problem to begin with? Why is it happening? What’s really at the root of it?
Sometimes this requires a lot of really introspection, but what comes out of it is a deep sense of self-awareness that develops into an intimate knowledge of just who you really are. And the knowing of just what it is that you need to thrive, and not what you perhaps might have been conditioned to believe.
And this is where each of us can ask ourselves, “What makes me unique? What makes me different from even my closest family members?” An identical twin can even ask what makes them different from their twin?
It really begs the question of, How well do we know ourselves? What parts of us are inherent to us, and what parts have we been conditioned to be?
Personal growth and development has become a large part of my self-healing journey and recently I was listening to someone speak on how we can come to truly love ourselves.
And what this person said was that to do so, to truly love ourselves, we need to let go of who we think we’re supposed to be, and instead, be who we really are. That we should stop trying to be the person who we think others expect us to be.
And yes, while I agree with that whole heartedly, it also left me asking, “But who am I? Do I even know who I really am?”
Because while it’s said that we’re out of alignment when our external selves don’t match with who we are or what we’re feeling internally, how many of us truly know who we actually are to begin with?
Now this is not me saying we don’t know ourselves because I believe that for the most part - we do. What I am suggesting is that we check-in, as we continually do, because as I said before, we change over time.
Transparently I can say that in my younger, more formative years, I don’t think I knew who I really was. I knew who my parents wanted me to be. Who those closest to me wanted me to be. But with time, life lessons learned and just evolving as a person, I feel like I have a closer relationship with myself, if that makes sense. I feel comfortable acknowledging and exploring parts of myself that I shied away from or avoided before, and now by embracing it, well it feels liberating.
And Human Design played a big transformative role in this evolution for me.
As I mentioned earlier, based on the kinds of questions I received, I don’t think many in my community are very familiar with Human Design.
Human Design is a framework that gives us insight and awareness to our authentic selves so that we can step into our highest potential in so many facets of our lives.
From how we can best offer our gifts to the world, create opportunities for ourselves, make decisions, communicate with and relate to others - I mean, can you imagine how synergistic society can be if we all had this understanding of not just ourselves, but of others as well? Isn’t that what we want? Harmony?
I’m of the belief that when we have inner peace, we’re healthier people, and when we have inner turmoil and out of alignment, that has a direct impact on our physical health.
So imagine how transformative Human Design can be in our work, relationships, communications - pretty much all aspects of our lives. How impactful can it be on our confidence and self-esteem? How we feel about ourselves?
How influential can it be on our stress levels and how we respond to and manage stress, fatigue and burnout? Because that in and of itself has a direct impact on the habits, choices and decisions we make for ourselves every single day.
So this was my long answer to the question, “Are you still doing health coaching?”
Yes, I am, with the 21-Day Sugar Detox, which by the way, I know offer as a self-paced program because I want to have it available to you based on your availability, not mine, as an entry point program to bettering your physical health, but also offering more targeted Functional Wellness coaching using the principles of Functional Nutrition to help those who have chronic conditions or specific concerns.
Because when we’re able to clear out the physical interferences, we can then take it a step further and incorporate Human Design, really rounding out the opportunity for a transformative experience.
So, over the course of the next several episodes, I’ll explore the fundamental, foundational basics of it with you for those of you who might be hearing about Human Design for the first time, sharing mostly from the lens of my own personal experiences with it, how I’m learning to integrate it, and how it helps me manage my stress.
In my Human Design chart, my Profile Lines are 1 and 3 meaning that through my 1st Line, I dive in, research, and find safety and security in the knowledge of the topics that interest me (ie Human Design), and through my 3rd Line, I need to discover and experience things for myself, learning by trial and error, and then sharing what I experienced with others as learned wisdom.
I mean, that right there is the accurate description of what this show is, before I even knew anything about Human Design.
Sharing my personal stories, experiences and lessons learned with you, and over the next several episodes, likely through the end of the summer, if I follow my mapped out plan, all on Human Design.
If you’re curious to look up your Human Design chart, you go to www.geneticmatrix.com and look it up for free and I’ll link to it in the show notes, but if you do, you’ll find that you’ll probably gonna need some help understanding it.
And if that’s something you’re interested in, you can book a foundational reading with me, which I’ll also link to in the show notes.
That’s it for today, thanks for listening and hope you’ll join me on a journey into Human Design!
Bye!
